Take Charge of Your Pregnancy: The Benefits of Starting Education Early
Why Early Childbirth Education is Essential
Pregnancy may seem like a long journey—ten months can feel like plenty of time. But trust me, it goes by in a flash. Preparing yourself early with comprehensive childbirth education can make all the difference in your experience.
Starting a childbirth education program in your first trimester gives you the time to truly prepare your body and mind for the incredible journey ahead. By beginning early, you can gradually absorb the vast amount of information you’ll need about pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum, rather than feeling overwhelmed later in your third trimester.
The Importance of Knowing Your Options
A key part of preparing for childbirth is understanding your options, and many of these options are presented well before the third trimester during prenatal visits. Yet, far too often, women enter their prenatal appointments without a clear understanding of what’s available to them.
Why is this the case?
In today’s standardized obstetrical care, the typical OB appointment lasts 5–7 minutes. That’s rarely enough time for your provider to dive into the details of your options or explain how their recommendations align with your specific needs. Instead, they often suggest standard protocols based on their office’s policies, which may or may not be the best fit for you.
You deserve care tailored to your unique health, circumstances, and preferences. The only way to ensure this is by educating yourself about your choices.
Why I Created the Well-Rounded Childbirth Education Program
Finding a childbirth education program that simplifies the process, covers all the essentials, and empowers you to take control of your care can be a challenge. When I had my first two children, no such program existed, so I decided to create one.
The Well-Rounded Childbirth Education Program is designed to guide you through every stage of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. It equips you with the knowledge you need to confidently navigate your prenatal care, so you’re never caught off guard. For example, you’ll know in advance about common procedures, such as the gestational diabetes screening at 28 weeks, and whether they’re right for you.
This program empowers you to approach your prenatal appointments informed and ready. When your provider says, “We’re doing this test today,” you’ll already know what it is, why it’s being done, and whether it’s relevant to your care—or if there are alternatives you’d prefer.
The Reality of Standardized Maternity Care
In no other area of healthcare is standardized care as prevalent as in maternity care. Imagine an oncologist telling their patient, “This is the treatment we give to everyone, regardless of individual circumstances. If it doesn’t work, then we’ll take a closer look at your situation.” That would be unthinkable. Yet, in maternity care, it happens all the time.
I experienced this firsthand during my current pregnancy. At my 13-week appointment, my doctor recommended I start taking low-dose aspirin—a common suggestion aimed at reducing the risk of preeclampsia. However, when I asked about my specific risk factors, she reviewed my chart and realized I didn’t have any. Without my questioning, I might have unnecessarily taken a medication with potential side effects.
This experience underscored the importance of being informed and advocating for myself, a skill I’ve built through education.
