Testing Testing 1, 2, 3: The Scoop on Pregnancy Tests

Before we dive into the good stuff, let's start with a little test!

Now, I can hear your thoughts racing: "I haven't studied, I don't know the answers, and I'm terrible at tests!" But don't you worry for a second, my friend. This test is a breeze, though you might accidentally pee on your hand.

So, let's get down to business. We're talking about something super important here: Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). At-home pregnancy tests are like little detectives, and their mission is to find traces of HCG in your urine.

HCG is a hormone secreted by the developing placenta, and it starts showing up in your system around 6 to 12 days after the egg gets fertilized. But here's the catch – it takes a bit of time for detectable levels to appear in your urine, so testing too early might give you a false negative.

Now, these tests come in various shapes and sizes - from simple strips you dip to plastic cartridges with an eyedropper, and even sticks you can either dip or, well, pee directly on!  They show results as lines or are all fancy and digital.

While those flashy digital tests might seem tempting, they can be quite pricey. And let's face a hard truth, sometimes the journey to conception takes a little longer than expected. That's where the more budget-friendly options, such as Test Strips, come into play! Using these cost-effective tests allows you to test more frequently without breaking the bank. Digital tests, on the other hand, are fantastic for confirming results and making that exciting announcement to your loved ones.

Now, when's the best time to take these tests, you ask? Well, it's often said that the morning, right after you wake up, is prime testing time. The idea is that HCG levels build up overnight, making them more likely to be detectable. It's a convenient time because you're usually at home and have easy access to a test.

If you don't have time to test first thing in the AM you can collect your pee in a cup and put it aside to test later. Just don’t accidentally think it's lemonade later.

Ever squint at a faint line or tilt the test back and forth because a line is barely there? A faint line is still a POSITIVE result!

Those lines will gradually darken and become clearer over the next few days. This is when digital tests can be helpful, as they give a crystal-clear "yes" or "no." However, if you test too early it may falsely read negative. Hence why I enjoy the little cheap strips you can get 20 to a box for less than 10 bucks.

If you get a negative result, it can be an emotional rollercoaster. The longer you are on your TTC journey, the harder it gets. You start questioning yourself, your partner, and everything you were taught about getting pregnant.

You're not alone. Many go through this time of questioning and hardship TTC. Sharing with a close friend or family member can be incredibly comforting.

Okay, now for a rare unicorn moment: False Positives! Home tests are generally reliable, but in some cases, like when undergoing fertility treatments, you might get a false positive. No worries, though – in such cases, healthcare providers typically use blood tests to confirm HCG levels.

So, what's next after you see those magical two lines or that fabulous plus sign?

Telling your partner for sure, but what else?
